Lake Michigan

Ludington & Pentwater

The Pere Marquette River flows into Lake Michigan at Ludington just a few miles north of Pentwater. The Pentwater River flows into Lake Michigan at Pentwater. Just a few miles south of Pentwater are Silver Lake sand dunes and Little Sable Pointe. An underwater point extends several miles into the lake from the area around Little Sable Pointe lighthouse. The ridge has very deep water on both sides with water depths changing from 50’ to over 200’ in less than a mile. It is this structure that draws bait fish and then the big fish we like to catch. By early July schools of big King Salmon, Coho Salmon and Steelhead arrive from the deep basin area of Lake Michigan to patrol the edges of these drop offs. July becomes the prime time to fish here. Wave after wave of salmon show up here over the next several weeks and then work their way up and down the coast. As August approaches many of these fish have dispersed to waters closer to the ports where they were stocked or the streams where they hatched from eggs. But for these few weeks in July the waters around Pentwater offer some awesome fishing. Salmon and Steelhead fishing has been excellent here for several years in a row. The next several years should continue to be outstanding.

The Pentwater River pools into a large lake just inland from sand dune beaches of Lake Michigan. The great harbor facilities, and private dockages along the shore of Pentwater Lake are only a few minutes from the open waters of Lake Michigan. Access to Lake Michigan is through a wide deep- water channel lined with people enjoying the ambience of this great resort town. Watching the sunset is an event enjoyed by many from the boardwalk and beach each day.

Scenery around the harbor and lake from main street is beautiful. Restaurants to suit your every taste and budget are only a few minutes walk from the municipal marina on main street. Main street is lined with these restaurants and shops selling everything imaginable. Charles Mears state park and campground are on the waterfront adjacent to the channel to lake. You can enjoy a leisurely walk from the ice cream shops to the boardwalk along the channel and end up at the beach. The park beach on Lake Michigan is soft white sand. Lodging is available here and just a few minutes away in the Sliver Lake dunes area.

The grassy picnic area between main street and the municipal docks is well groomed and lined with picnic tables and grills. Enjoy a picnic here as the view of the harbor with it’s comings and goings of boats makes for a relaxing day when you are not fishing. Pentwater is a wonderful resort town that just happens to have some great fishing.
